Birthing Mother
Part of a series of artworks Titled:
The Archetypal Mothers - a Reclamation of the Self.
This series is an exploration of the many layers within motherhood, the sacrifices and the blessings. A testament to divine femininity, identity and the self that is lost and found.
The Birthing Mother is a young, beautiful, radiant brunette who sits naked, bare to the world, vulnerable but full of hope. She is sat on a cloud, with darkness beneath her. She ascends upwards, towards the softness of the skies above her. Her breasts are full and ready to nurse her baby, her legs are spread wide apart in a sort of birthing position. In between her legs is a large blossoming flower, representing labour, and the delicate anatomy of a woman’s vagina. From afar the flower seems perfectly formed and blossoming, however when the viewer looks up close the impasto detail is cracked and damaged. This is a poetic representation of childbirth and labour, postpartum and life as a new mother. On the outside they “bounce back” and “look great” but are faced with the physical and emotional changes, alone. No one else can share that vulnerability with them. She lovingly holds up a butterfly in her hand, the butterfly is a metaphor for femininity, and hope. It is also a very personal touch as it is the illustrative symbol of winning a battle against cancer and recovery.
