warrior mother

Part of a series of artworks Titled:

The Archetypal Mothers - a Reclamation of the Self.

This series is an exploration of the many layers within motherhood, the sacrifices and the blessings. A testament to divine femininity, identity and the self that is lost and found.

The Warrior Mother is a woman who stands against injustice, oppression and abuse of women and children around the world. She fights for the safety of the innocent, with her own strength. Her features are striking, her eyes are dark from afar but reveal much hidden depth when looking up close. Her hair is hidden under a veil, with chiffon covering her chest, her nipples barely visible through the fabric. She is not sexualised, she is covered, but she attracts the eyes of all who pass her. She wears turquoise and ruby gems set in gold jewellery that become her body armour. Her necklace is made up of 2D/3D clusters of gold leaf flakes and crystals, making you want to touch the artwork with your fingers to explore the tactile sensation of the painting. Her curved swords resemble the ancient Persian Shamshir and the Ethiopian Shotel. This is a tribute to the women in the Middle East and Africa who have had to fight both lion and man to safeguard themselves and their children. Where their femininity surpassed just their beauty and their physical desirability, but did, in fact, transform them into warriors.
